Minnewanka, Banff National Park
While in the Town of Banff, we headed over to the largest lake in Banff National Park, Minnewanka ; it’s also the most beautiful of the Canadian Rockies. Only a 25 minute drive from the Town of Banff, Minnewanka is one of the most visited lakes for tourists across the world.
That being said, it’s suggested to reserve a boat tour in advance during the summer season, as it’s pretty much impossible to enjoy the lake by a mere car ride. We basically spent a good hour on the road, finding there wasn’t any place to park.
So — next time we visit the world famous Minnewanka we’ll take an interpretive boat tour with picnicking included. This is the true natural way to visit Minnewanka. Not only do you get to enjoy a nice leisure boat ride, you’ll possibly see more wildlife then we saw by car. In fact, we only saw one Big Horn Sheep during our road trip. Strange enough, Minnewanka is supposed to be the best place to encounter wildlife, from wolves, grizzlies to Elk.
According to archeologists, Minnewanka was occupied by early Aboriginal tribes for a good 10,000 years. Apparently there’s a lot of artifacts to prove that claim.
Minnewanka is fed by the glacier Cascade River, showcasing a beautiful bluish - green lake. Due to the runoff, it’s also one of the coldest lakes.
So — What did I learn about Minnewanka ?
Don’t drive there— take a scenic boat ride. I highly suggest the beer cruise, of course
The best part, Free Bus From Downtown Banff. Just show your tour tickets to Route 6 Bus Driver with the ROAM PUBLIC TRANSIT
Cheers !
